 Monemvasia

Monemvasia for the locals,Malvoisie for the Franks and Malmsey   for the English, the name of this area derives from the compounds "moni"(="the only one") and "emvasi"(=entrance"), because it was the only entrance to this castle town. The old town of Monemvasia is a vibrant medieval settlement, excellently preserved.Castles and fortification walls, old low covers, arches, coats of arms, emperial marble thrones and Byzantine icons give the impression of a town straight out of our imagination, untouched by the  hand of time, with an air of romanticism and history.

Monuments and churches can be found scattered around the castle, while an important archaeological collection is housed in the Old Mosque, at the Square of Elkomenos Christos. The new town of Monemvasia extends just before the bridge, while going south we come across the coastal settlements of Nomia.

Inside and also around Monemvasia there are many notable beaches, that offers the unique experience of swimming under the shadow of the castle town.

The visitor, however, must not ignore the surprises hiding in the mainland, such as the watermill of Talanta and the Folklore Museum at Velies.the area's religious monuments can also be found outside the castle's walls, the most important being the twin Churches at teria and the churche of Aghios nikolaos at the settlement of the same name

Pavlopetri studios-restaurant are about 1 hour away from Monemvasia .
